This week’s theme is “Action.” 75 years ago, baseball, sports, and society changed forever. A young athlete named Jackie Robinson took the field for the Brooklyn Dodgers. Now, most debuts are not publicized. However, this was not a typical debut. Jackie Robinson became the first black athlete to take the field as a major league baseball player. Jackie overcame much ridicule, hate, and prejudice, but through it all, he took the action to continually improve his craft as a baseball player and showed that he belonged on the field with every other major leaguer. He was able to control his actions to not retaliate or give in to the hate and prejudice and was able to become a teammate and leader for the Brooklyn Dodgers. When he entered major league baseball, he was the only one, now major league baseball has players from all over the world. Had Branch Rickey, owner of the Brooklyn Dodgers, not taken action and brought Jackie Robinson to Brooklyn, sports and society may be so much different today.
Branch Rickey’s action started a movement that opened the door for so many. His actions prompted so many others to follow suit and open new doors for people who were “different”. Much like Branch Rickey, teachers take action each day to provide different learners the opportunity to grow and get an education. We bring students with different backgrounds and ethnicities into our classrooms and provide each one the opportunity to learn. Sometimes, the opportunities to provide our students are more than they have ever been given before. So as educators, we need to take action and show our students that even though they may look, act or learn differently than others, we will provide them with every opportunity to grow.
